In a recent NORLINX facility project, the data center delivery cost, once complete, was in excess of $38K per Kilowatt. The Uptime Institute provides guidance that estimates data center construction costs at between $25K and $50K per Kilowatt of UPS capacity. This range is meant to accommodate the resiliency level of the data center. It makes sense that N resiliency will cost less than a highly resilient 2(N+1) UPS and power infrastructure.
To calculate costs, we multiply costs per kilowatt x kilowatts saved;
N*(UPS Available today - UPS Available tomorrow) = Money saved - Capital costs for upgrade hardware
Where N = the cost of new data center construction.
For our example, we'll choose N= $25Kthe most conservative number.
In a NORLINX customer case study, UPS usage dropped from 260kVA to 52kVA, resulting in a savings of $4.58M.
N *(260kVA-52kVA) = Money Saved - Capital costs for upgrade hardware
$25K/kVA (208kVA) = 5.2 MM - Capital costs for new Servers ($9800 x 63 = .617MM)

Capital costs must be included to tell the whole story; new equipment was needed to move to VM systems. The client chose a 7 to 1 reduction ratio to move those VM systems. Their costs for VM system were $9800 per VM platform, reducing 441 servers to 63 VM systems.
Gartner Consulting found that approximately 10% of all data center applications are no longer being used. If driftwood applications are identified and eliminated within the data center, the following equation applies:
UPS Capacity x 0.10 x N = Estimated savings
For our example above with a 260kVA UPS system, our savings would look like this:
260kVA x 0.10 x $25K = $650K dollars in savings
